LSVT BIG Parkinson’s Disease Therapy

Nearly 1 million Americans are living with Parkinson’s Disease, and approximately 60,000 new diagnoses are made each year. Physical therapy can help patients at all stages of PD, with the goal of keeping them moving as well as possible for as long as possible. Several Sports & More Physical Therapy by ACCESS PT locations offer LSVT BIG, a specialized treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.

What is LSVT BIG?

LSVT BIG is a conservative form of physical therapy treatment for patients with Parkinson’s Disease. It focuses on incorporating large amplitude activities into everyday activities, such as walking, in order to mitigate the effects of Parkinson’s disease on the body.

What can I expect at my first session?

The first session will consist of an evaluation of the patient’s overall strength and mobility in order to determine areas in need of improvement. The PT will then provide a guided session of specific exercises that challenge dynamic balance, coordination, and encourage large movements and stretching. The program is 4x per week for 4 weeks with an emphasis on “BIG” movements to help patients reach their goals of maximal functional mobility.

I was just diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, should I start treatment now or should I wait until I see my symptoms change?

With a progressive condition such as Parkinson’s Disease, a PT evaluation should ideally be performed as early as possible in order to establish a baseline for continued care and treatment. This form of treatment helps to combat the progressive effects of the disease and will be most effective in the earlier stages of the disease.

Is this program helpful for advanced stage Parkinson’s?

This depends! The program is most effective in earlier stages, where the body is more adaptable and able to benefit greater from strength, mobility, and balance training. It can also be used as a preventative measure. However, LSVT BIG is often utilized in combination with medications, which together can provide good patient response.

What makes LSVT BIG different from other Parkinson’s therapies?

It is functional and fun!! It does not require medication or invasive treatments, and can be continued at home after the conclusion of therapy sessions.
