Your questions, answered: Let’s talk about back pain!
Back pain is one of the most common issues treated by physical therapists – unfortunately, most of us will experience it at some point in our lives. Join Kiersten Flynn, PT, DPT to learn the answers to some of her most common patient questions!
I’ve been having more back pain as I age. Is this an unavoidable part of aging, or can it be resolved?
The aging process is not always fun and can cause pain. However, there are many things we can do to prevent pain and improve motion and strength as we age. A consistent program can absolutely address pain from age related conditions. Remember, you are as young as you feel 😉
Where is the most common back pain?
The most common complaint has typically been in the lower back. However, with many people now working from home during the pandemic, mid-back pain due to poor desk posture is on the rise.
What everyday activities should I avoid that may be making my pain worse?
Everyone is different and no two backs are alike. What may aggravate one person’s pain may not bother another. Meeting with your physical therapist can help determine what factors can improve and worsen your back symptoms.
Can stretches help?
My all-time favorite is the cat-cow (or cat-camel) stretch. However, it is also important to have good flexibility/mobility of your hips and legs as well.
Is my posture really contributing to back pain? How can I correct it while working at my desk?
Yes, posture during repetitive activities can add stress to the spine. An easy thing for you to do is to have a chair with back support while you work. Also, a proper desk set up and a core strengthening program can reduce stress and prevent pain.
