4 Tips for Spring Cleaning Safety

Spring has sprung! Along with enjoying the warmer weather, many of us are beginning our annual spring cleaning activities – window washing, decluttering, cleaning closets, ceiling fans, and all of the other items that are only cleaned occasionally. Spring cleaning can be a rewarding task but is sometimes limited by pain or poor flexibility, balance, or range of motion. Some simple adjustments can reduce strain on your body to help you complete these tasks with greater comfort and ease.

  1. A common source of pain or injury is from lifting heavy objects, like furniture or boxes, with poor form. When lifting, the power should come from your legs. Keep your back straight and supported by your abdominal muscles. Minimize the strain on your shoulders and arms by keeping the object close to your body. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! If an object is large, heavy, or bulky, have a friend or family member assist you.  This will not only reduce the weight, but also makes it easier for you to control the object as you lift.
  2. If you are packing up seasonal items, bending to pack/unpack boxes on the floor can be troublesome for the back. Place the boxes on a table to reduce the need for bending.
  3. Unsecured shelving units are helpful for storing items but require careful organization to avoid accident or injury. Be sure to place the heaviest objects on low shelves to avoid tip-overs. Avoid lifting heavy objects above shoulder height, as this often leads to injury.
  4. Stretch before and after prolonged cleaning to reduce stiffness and to warm up/cool down to minimize muscle soreness. Remember to take breaks often while you are working to stretch and relax your muscles. Staying hydrated during and after cleaning can also help with this.
